How to make a quality SEO-audit of the site: a detailed guide to the analysis of the technical component, semantics, on-page optimization

Well, that day has come.

I have been specializing in SEO audits for more than three years. I have long wanted to summarize and systematize the experience of hundreds of analyzed projects. There are a lot of materials on the topic, there are even huge check lists for hundreds of checks. However, the vast majority of manuals talk about auditing as a mechanical check of an infinite number of technical parameters. Sometimes these checks have a rather indirect relation to attracting search traffic.

For me, an audit is more like a fascinating detective investigation. From technical details can not escape-but it's just collecting evidence. The real goal is to find and neutralize the shortcomings of the site, which steal its potential traffic on important business keywords.

It makes no sense to build a perfect site – it is expensive and long (meanwhile, the criteria of perfection can change). You need to make a website that meets the goals of the project. The task of the auditor is to give recommendations with a good effect/cost ratio, to find the magic 20% of the efforts that bring 80% of the result.

The post is primarily addressed to professionals and webmasters who want to do decent audits (Oh, I think I grow my competitors... well, for the article has already taken, not to waste the same good). Potential customers are also not harmful to better understand the "kitchen" in which reports are prepared.

So, welcome to SEO detective school!

I. Before you get down to business: the basics

What is SEO audit?


Already with the definition of audit there is a little confusion.

  • On the one hand, audit is the process of site analysis. 
  • And this is the result of the analysis-a report for the customer. 
It is easy to understand that the audit plan (what the customer will see) and the work plan (what the specialist will do) are completely different things. A specialist should first carefully study the site, get acquainted with its specifics and only then formulate recommendations.

Therefore, it is not possible to create a single universal check list or template. More precisely, no one bothers to come up with a thousand checks and shove them into the plan. But then for a particular site half will be completely irrelevant (why the customer to read it all?). More importantly, there is a risk of missing out on a thousand first issues or a way to improve the site. While the specialist will go through this whole cloud of points, he will completely lose his strength and imagination.

The only thing good audits in the format of the list of checks-easy generation. Plug-in API a dozen services or plant trainee copy of information hands – and forward, to handle the day dozens of sites.

Types of SEO audits

Another reason why the usual list of items for analysis is not suitable for work is the huge variety of audits.

First of all, they differ in the purpose of writing. Why may I need to analyze the site? Why should anyone:

Sites are also different:

  • Under development / indexed. 
  • Under the sanctions/no apparent problems. 
  • Online stores/content projects/service sites / aggregators. 
The whole process of analysis and the final content should correspond to the tasks and specifics of the project. To drive a variety of combinations of “features of the site + purpose” one-a check-list is impossible. But this does not mean that finding common approaches are generally not allowed and audits to do in obedience to the inspiration.

Note: we will consider the classic audit, which is performed in order to honestly lay the Foundation for the promotion of an existing site with traffic and positions. It corresponds to the most complete and in-depth analysis, so that the story will be truly revealing. Other types are derived from it by placing accents in the report or omitting individual stages.

II. How to make a useful audit: stages of work

I adhere to the following scheme:

  • Collect project information from the owner. 
  • Analysis of audience, search demand and competitors. 
  • Checking the compliance of the site audience and demand. 
  • General technical audit. 
  • Traffic analysis. 
  • Analysis of sections. 
  • On-page optimization. 
  • Display in the output. 
  • Analysis of the reference mass. 
  • Check for search engine sanctions, risk assessment. 
  • Additional checks related to the specifics of the project. 
  • Search for effective ways to develop the project. 
  • Minimization of risks associated with modifications. 
  • The design of the report. 

Consider each step.

I Collect information about the project

First of all, we try to make our work as easy as possible by collecting maximum data. Audit is practically necessary:

  • Access to the statistics system (usually Yandex.Metric or Google Analytics). In Runet Metric is preferable, as it contains data on keywords that gave traffic from Yandex. 
  • Access to webmaster panels (primarily Yandex.Webmaster and Search Console; more exotic options-panels Mail and Bing will not be superfluous). 
It is also desirable to:

  • Server logs at least a week (better for the month). 
  • Access to the position monitoring service. 
  • Access to exchange links, if any. 
  • Semantic kernel. 
  • A description of the work carried out on the site over the past 3-6 months, promotion reports, if there is a contractor made earlier audits. 
  • Correspondence with technical support of Yandex. 
  • Questions from the client, a description of the possibilities for improvements, content creation, the General budget (it makes no sense to make recommendations, which will not be implemented due to lack of resources). 

III. verification of compliance of the site audience and demand

So, by this point, we already have an idea of what a website should be like to meet the business goals of attracting search traffic. Let's compare this performance with reality.

A specific list of checks is dictated by the specifics of the audience; we consider a typical case.

Assessment of regional binding

If Central Asia is concentrated in specific cities or regions, you need to make sure that search engines understand this binding.

  • Geo-referencing in Yandex is done by specifying the region in Yandex.The webmaster Directory or the Directory. Problems usually arise when there is a desire to collect traffic not from one region, but from a couple of dozen. The most reliable way in this case is to create regional subdomains – each of them is considered as a separate site, which you can set the region in the webmaster panel. 
  • In the console of Google functionality on the geo-referenced is limited to the indication of the country. So the search signal of regional identity in other ways. First of all, it is an indication of specific contact information on the site and registration in Google My Business. 

For multilingual sites in Google, you also need to configure the hreflang attribute.

Analysis of design and technical component

Usability analysis is not within the competence of SEO-specialist. However, the site should at least minimally meet the needs of the audience, so as not to demonstrate horrendously bad behavioral factors.

First of all, you want to test the viewing experience on mobile devices.

For most projects, the correct display on mobile is strictly necessary and this is one of the most priority improvements. About the rapid growth of the proportion of users who access the Internet only from mobile does not know only lived in the taiga the last five years.

However, we do a real manual audit, not replace a robot that churns out the same reports. It is easy to imagine a situation where the implementation of adaptive design will require serious costs, while the share of requests from mobile is small, and the owner already has where to apply resources in preparation for the season. By the way, not always optimized for mobile so much improves the activity and loyalty of users.

Therefore, before forming a recommendation on this issue, it is necessary to estimate the volume of mobile traffic in the subject. See the total number of impressions on the key request from all devices:

The auditor usually looks through a huge number of pages of the site, so by the end of the work accumulates a lot of comments on the problems in the work. Add them to the report will not hurt, but you need to ensure that the comments coincide with the vision of the CA, and not the preferences of the auditor.

Typical checks:

  • Adequate audience colors. 
  • No annoying and non-working elements. 
  • Layout problems on different extensions, browsers and operating systems. 
Mapping the structure of the site with developments in the semantic kernel

After drawing up a semantic kernel, we do not knowingly singled out three groups of key words. Now check if there is space in the structure for all types of queries.

As a rule, the most frequent keys are placed on the main and section pages, requests-extensions are covered by tag pages.

It is important to distinguish between headings that can become sections, and those that should be done labels (additions to headings).

The headings are those groups of pages that are highlighted in a single logic, on one principle, which is the most universal, important and understandable to the user. This principle should imply a relatively small number of sections, however, covering all pages. The marks go to "finishing". The principle may look cumbersome, but it is easy to learn by considering an example:

So designed logical structure, which thus can be easily expanded. The principle applies not only to online shopping. Even in this loose format of the website as the blog structure doesn't hurt.

Note how the content is organized on this blog – there are a limited number of headings on the main topics:

The beauty is that you can add labels to them without a special system (see the impressive list in the side column). Someday I will get my hands on working through them, creating effective landing pages.

That is, at this step we design the “ideal” structure based on the scope of search demand, while trying to leave it as flexible as possible. Of course, it does not hurt to see how the content is organized on the real sites of competitors. You won't necessarily find a full copy, however at least a number of elements should occur. If you do not manage to find anything similar – should reconsider the situation. Probably not taken into account the important pitfalls of the subject.

Then we compare this theoretical variant with the current state of Affairs.

Search for relevant pages

Take from our core marker queries (main queries of the cluster) and remove them position. For requests that are not found in the TOP 100 repeat the procedure, but request already with the operator site:

As a result, we get a list of request-page pairs. We look through it, first of all paying attention to the requests from the first group, where the site was below the TOP 30 and the second group completely.

Two situations are possible:

  • there is a relevant page under the request (key in title, content is adequate to user interest), but it loses in competition. 
  • under the request is not fully relevant page. 
We are interested in both. We will deal with low positions of pages corresponding to the request (1 case) later. But the cases when a suitable page on the site is simply not, we are considering now. These are gaps in the structure of the site. They need to be studied to see if we can expand it so that there is a place for all missed requests and was not broken logic. Often, if the structure was originally poorly designed, it is impossible. Then there is the question of a complete restructuring of the site.

The previous few paragraphs seem rather cumbersome. In fact, there is nothing complicated here, all the arguments are elementary. To be clear, I sketched a diagram of:

Those requests that in the last step were in the red rectangle, we collect and analyze. I remind you that we are not working with a specific semantics – we are looking for its trends to improve the structure of the site. As a rule, in the selected queries it is easy to identify common features and correlate them with the type of pages in the previously designed “ideal” structure.

Due to this analysis, it is often possible to avoid a global restructuring of the site (which is costly, long time and threatens a temporary, but still unpleasant drawdown of traffic).

Comparison with competitor visibility

The resulting version of the structure cannot be considered final. We started with the simplest and most important – requests that must necessarily be covered. Now it will be useful to understand what other keywords should be promoted. It is possible that in order to achieve the maximum effect, the structure will need to be expanded further. It would be wise to foresee this possibility.

For estimation of lost requests use the functionality of the “compare domains” in the services visibility. For example, pay Keys.so or Serpstat. In this case, the free Bukvarix is also suitable (since we assess the General trends, and do not work with the final semantics, the relevance of requests is not so important to us, which is higher in paid services):

Note: this is a typical order of operation if we decide to compete head-on. If on the basis of competitors ' analysis the strategy of avoiding direct competition for the TOP is chosen, then the structure is built differently.

First, you need to evaluate the requests for which progress will be real. It is on their basis that we form the system of pages. At the same time, it is necessary to try to make the structure flexible enough so that in the future it can be expanded and/or refocused on competitive requests.

This is one of the most important parts of the audit. If there are real problems with the distribution of content on the pages and the structure of the url, the text includes a detailed description of the proposed option, illustrated by schemes and examples on the sites of competitors. The same applies to regionality settings and technical requirements.

IV. of the General technical audit

The previous items were just a preparation for the main work. Now that there is a certain understanding of the audience, competitors and the overall structure of the project, it's time to move on to the subject analysis.

We start with the basic things related to the entire site.

Check robots.txt

Robots.txt is a file containing instructions for search engines. There is nothing complicated in working with it, but special attention is required, as one wrong line in robots.txt could bring down the whole site traffic.

What you need to do:

  • Check the file's conformity to the standards using the tools in Yandex.Webmaster and Google Search Console. 
  • Check for the host: Directive for Yandex. 
  • Check whether the pages that can potentially bring traffic are not closed from indexing (we consider the “Disallow: "directives, check whether they do not match the url templates of important sections; for simplicity, we use the same online services from Google and Yandex). 
  • Check if closing is used in robots.txt is other ways to control the indexing (a common mistake is to close to the robots.txt pagination). 

Settings in webmaster panels

  • Whether the main mirror is specified. 
  • Whether the section “Diagnostics” in Yandex is worked out.Webmaster (there is a lot of valuable advice on the site, not all are required, for example, setting the region is not relevant for sites with non-volatile queries, but to view this section is) and notifications in the Search Console. 
  • Whether the robot sees the site map. 

Sitemap analysis.xml and making a complete list of site pages

Actually, the sitemap is optional, it's just an additional entry point for robots. However, for large complex projects, it makes indexing easier in case of problems with structure and relinking. If the sitemap is correct, it is convenient to use it for a variety of SEO Analytics techniques.

Even if you don't use sitemap.xml for its intended purpose, for further analysis, in any case, we need a complete list of site pages that we want to see in the index.

We extract this data from several sources:

  • Sitemap itself. 
  • Parsing website special programs to theaudit (there are paid options such as Screaming Frog, there are free alternatives). 
  • Information from the client, from the admin panel (there are sections that do not lead internal links and the crawler is not able to find them). 

Check the indexing

For more or less large sites (already hundreds of pages) there is always a risk of incomplete indexing of pages. Less url in the index-less traffic than it could be.

To check the indexation in Yandex is convenient to use Yandex.Webmaster:

Unload all pages, filter in Excel by indexing status and compare with the list that was compiled in the previous step.

Google does not provide such detailed information, so you have to look for workarounds.

As a result of this step, we can have three groups of URLs:

The most interesting pages are:

  • mistakenly included in the index (”garbage " documents); 
  • with high-quality content that are not available in the database of search engines.
With "garbage" is usually quite simple, you only need to find an adequate way to exclude them from the situation index. A lot of options:

  • Noindex meta tag (for technical pages). 
  • Using rel=canonical (for duplicates, see Google help). 
  • Return code 404-or, more reliable, 410 (for pages that should not be on the site at all). 
But the reasons for the absence of the index need to work, considering all possible hypotheses:

  • The document is too young; the robot simply did not have time to process it. 
  • Not enough quality page. 
  • Technical error on the website (for example, 404 code is given). 
  • The document is old, but the robots did not visit it. 

To analyze the reasons we will partly help the same section Yandex.Webmaster-pages excluded from the index are shown with short comments. To determine the pages not visited by Yandex robot, use the crawl Statistics section. Google does not provide this information, so we use server log analysis (see next section).

Checking the server response code makes most of the above mentioned programs for technical audit.

The most time-consuming Analytics is needed to identify differences between “high-quality” and “low-quality” in terms of admission to the index pages (the problem is relevant mainly for Yandex; in Google, low-quality URLs can hang in the index, just do not bring traffic).

The General scheme is quite simple-compare the pages that are steadily in the search, with those that can not go into it or constantly fall out. Difficulties in the following:

  • Factors other than the page itself can affect. It is impossible to reduce everything to the uniqueness of the content (the first thing that usually comes to mind). 
  • It is necessary to compare pages with similar traffic potential and the level of competition in the issue 
  • It is important to highlight factors that are easy to pull up to an acceptable level. Recommendation "write a unique text on each of the 10,000 product cards" is unlikely to be accepted by the customer with delight. 

Server log analysis

Access.log contains valuable information about the interaction of search engines with the site. Even just a list of URLs that Googlebot and YandexBot have visited is an opportunity:
  • Find garbage pages of poor quality that the parser does not see, but which are known to the robot. Including, by the way, it can be specially generated by competitors url. 
  • Determine which sections of the site receive few visits to the robot (if such a section contains many pages – this can lead to poor indexing). 
  • Consider one of the reasons why the url group index is missing from the previous step. 

Often the conclusions from this section take an important place in the final report. In case of any problems with the settings of indexing and/or completeness of the index need to issue detailed guidance on the control of the robot and the completions of the project. Correct perception by search spiders is the basis of promotion.

V. traffic Analysis


The study of real site statistics can give a lot of valuable information. First of all, it is an opportunity to look at the project from different sides, to find the same problems in different manifestations.

Dynamics of the number of pages bringing traffic


Excellent metric of” health " of the site, its visibility on low-frequency requests. Normally, the number of landing pages is growing or stable. The change in this indicator can be used to predict future traffic. The downward trend is a reason to attend to the relevance of content, completeness of indexing and technical errors.

Of course, the analysis of dynamics should take into account seasonality.

Identification and analysis of specific types of pages

Pages that have lost traffic

This test is rarely featured in the plans of the audits, but I think it is absolutely necessary.

Pages where traffic has decreased

To find such URLs, compare the data on the login pages with the previous period. For example, in Google Analytics this is done as follows:

If the previous paragraph aims to identify, first and foremost, technical problems with mass analysis, in this step, we collect the documents for a thorough manual analysis separately. We consider the pages with the largest volume of traffic and the maximum drawdown, we look for its causes.

Pages with growth potential in one of the search engines

Runet is in a unique situation – we have two search engines that give comparable traffic. In different subjects, the ratio of Google / Yandex is not the same, but in most cases the site should give traffic and one and the other search engine.

A good way of finding promising for the elaboration and promotion of these documents is the assessment of the balance of traffic from various search engines as a whole for the site and for each particular page. It is obvious that if the share of Google in all search traffic is 50%, and for a certain group of URLs is only 10%, then you should do them more tightly. Most likely, there is already content that meets the requests with a non-zero frequency – and in Yandex, these keys regularly bring a lot of visitors. Often only a small effort is needed to make the page more relevant for the second search engine.

Pages with bad / deteriorated behavioral factors

Select the page with a fairly significant search traffic (to provide statistical confidence) and find the ones that have the highest rate of otkazov/low depth/short duration session. These pages should be manually reviewed to determine the quality of the content and how it meets the needs of the audience.

Keyword analysis

Lost keywords

The idea is similar to checking pages that have lost traffic. If the keyword is still relevant and has a non-zero search demand, you need to find out the reasons why it stopped working.

Keywords with a lowered position

Determined on the basis of the data of the Webmaster, the Search Console or a third-party service pickup positions. Bundles " strongly sifted request-page” must be carefully studied. Often there are found either a technical error, or replacement of content or meta tags with less relevant, or search engine sanctions.

The keywords that give traffic to different URLs

Often it is a signal of incorrect content distribution on pages and internal competition. The most obvious cases (when the volume of traffic on different pages is comparable) need to be studied manually to determine the relevant page that best meets the goals of the business. Of course, it is not enough to choose a page, it is only the first step. The main thing – to develop a list of measures to make the right choice search engines.

Typical way:
  • Edit and Refine title, h1. 
  • Minimize occurrences on a non-target page. 
  • Change the relink to maximize the number of links with the desired anchor on the target document. 

Keywords outside the TOP 5, but with a large number of impressions

Determined on the basis of the data about the position and shows in the Webmaster and Search Console. Often these are the keys for which no sighting optimization was carried out. At the same time, they have good potential for traffic. Usually it is not difficult to pull up positions and collect enough traffic.

VI. section Analysis

Any large site is heterogeneous, it consists of several sections, each of which (with proper content structuring) corresponds to a niche with its own search demand, competition, patterns of user behavior.

Therefore, an adequate audit must contain a comparative analysis of the sections. Moreover, without careful study of the site in parts can not be sure that it has no technical problems. The indicators that we have tested for “catching” problems can easily be distorted by different dynamics in sections.

Here's a simple example. Look carefully at the screenshot of the report on the sections for the site, which is vigorously growing overall traffic:

The analysis itself is quite simple. You only need to collect data on the number of pages, indexing, traffic, conversions, reference weight, and so on in the PivotTable. Then the problems and inconsistencies appear at a glance.

VII. on-page optimization

Only at the seventh stage we start a full technical audit-what is usually meant by SEO-audit in General. These are banal, but important checks. Why do we perform them now and not before? Actually, there's no big difference. However, to date, we” see the forest", understand the main trends and problems. You can not be afraid to drown in the little things: on the contrary, the little things will only deepen the vision and help to make more reliable conclusions.

A large part of the analysis is performed in programs crawlers are also a lot of useful data contain a panel of webmasters (see “HTML Optimization” in the Search Console and Diagnostics in Yandex.Webmaster.

Title analysis

The most important element of optimization is the title tag. Each SEOs knows the requirements; the key is uniqueness, adequate description of the content on the page and the occurrence of keywords.

A lot of services and programs mark the length of title more than 60-65 characters as an error. I wrote in detail about this misconception, and then conducted a separate study on a large sample (see the report C Allintop). The conclusion is simple – the length is purely secondary; the title is generated based on the objectives for the promotion.

However, too long title (more than 12 words or 140 characters) may indicate a technical error or an attempt to shove in the title of an exorbitant number of keywords.

By the way, check the uniqueness of the title is taking into account the morphology. On large projects title (and pages!) often duplicated meaning. They do not completely coincide, but contain the same lemmas (basic forms of words).

Level 1 headers (h1)

The analysis is similar to the title analysis. The difference here is that uniqueness is not a strict requirement, but a recommendation; in some cases, the same h1 on different pages is not critical. H1 should also be present on the page in 1 copy (modern HTML-standards allow you to use several, but it is better not to put such experiments on your site, do more traditional layout schemes).

Correct use of other headers

It is desirable that H1-h6 headers be used only within the main content. Lazy coders often title using H2 widgets in the site bar, it is better to avoid such situations. Search engines will be easier to deal with the content, if all the titles will apply to it.

This is not a particularly strict recommendation; it is likely that search engines will understand any layout, but incorrect use of subheadings can, for example, complicate the analysis using automatic content evaluation services.

Description

Does not affect the ranking per se, but may improve the display in the output. The duplicate and missing meta description can be to find the problematic page (generated by mistake or with weak elaboration of content).

Broken links

Ideally, internal links on the site should give the code 200. 302/301 redirects are also allowed (if used consciously). But 404 error after clicking on the internal link user or robot should not receive-it is necessary to monitor the relevance of the content.

Structure of content on different types of pages

This is not so much a technical audit as a comprehensive one-at the page level. It is necessary to consider the composition of the content on the typical site pages and determine how they meet the interests of users and the task of covering keywords.

Page-level indexing control

Indexing settings in General have already been discussed above; at this stage, it is necessary, based on the analysis of the content, to determine which pages make sense to allow the index, and which do not. A typical question is how to deal with pagination pages.

More or less universal solution-to use the meta tag noindex, follow on the subpages (we allow the robot to follow the links, so as not to complicate indexing) – is quite a working option, but it is not ideal. Yandex recommends the use of rel canonical, pointing to the first page (which contradicts the essence of canonical). Optimal, but also the most difficult to implement is to leave the index subpages with the obligatory giving them additional value with the help of unique meta tags and relevant content.

Download speed

Thanks to Google's efforts to promote fast sites, only the lazy one doesn't know that download speed is a ranking factor. Even stronger influence speed has on the index (crawlingly budget), and conversion (nobody wants to wait to load a slow website).

Therefore, it is very popular to insert the result of analysis in The page Speed Insights service into audits: https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/. Doing so is wrong for a number of reasons. Most importantly-the service does not measure the speed, but only shows the point of application of effort to improve it.

What to do if the most popular tool is not suitable?

First, you should check all page types (not just the main page!) in the services that are to measure the speed. For example, here: https://www.webpagetest.org/.

Secondly, a lot of real speed data contains Analytics systems. Slide from the above-mentioned report:

The report usually includes applications with lists of problem pages, recommendations on templates for meta tags and content improvements.

VIII. Display the results
